Ford Mustang Boss 302 Trivia Quiz

The 1969 and 1970 Boss 302s were rated at 290 horsepower @ 5800 rpm.  The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was also rated at 290 horsepower. 

The Boss 302 won the Trans Am series in 1970.  Before the birth of the Boss 302, Ford won the series in 1966 and 1967.  Chevrolet won the series in 1968 and 1969 with their Z28.

Larry Shinoda is considered the father of the Boss 302.  His previous work at GM included designing the Corvette Mako Shark concept, which evolved into the 1963 Sting Ray.

The 1969 Boss 302 was only available in four colors:
• Bright Yellow: 649 were made,
• Calypso Coral: 410 were made,
• Acapulco Blue: 375 were made,
• Wimbledon White: 194 were made.

Both the 1969 and 1970 Boss 302 used VIN code G.  VIN Code H was for the 351-2V and M for the 351-4V.

The Boss 302 is often called a "Cleveland" because it used modified 351 Cleveland 4V cylinder heads.  "Shot Gun" referred to the Boss 429 while "K" referred to the 289K engine - the Boss Jet is totally made up

Larry Shinoda actually worked for Ford in 1955 before switching to Packard and then General Motors in 1956 before coming back to Ford.  He never worked for Chrysler, but hey we tried to set a trap.

Unlike other Ford-Windsor based engines, the Boss 302 used eight valve cover bolts due to using Cleveland cylinder heads.

The standard axle for the Boss 302 was a 3.50.  Optionally, a 3.50 Traction Lock, 3.91 Traction Lock or 4.30 Traction Lock/Detroit Locker were available.

• Ram Air was only available as an option on the 1970 Boss 302,
• All Boss 302s used a factory rev limiter,
• All Boss 302s used a front lower splitter,
• Boss 302s did not use factory hood pins,
• 1969 Boss 302s used larger intakes valves compared to 1970 models,
• 1969 Boss 302s used chrome valves covers while 1970s were cast aluminum,
• Boss 302s did not use factory hood mounted tachometers.

The Boss 302 could be ordered with either a close or wide ratio Ford four speed top loader transmission.  The Borg Warner transmissions were phased out by the mid-1960s while the FMX was an automatic transmission, which were not available in any Boss Mustang.
