BMW owns Rolls Royce and Mini.  Both Bentley and Ducati are part of the VW group.

The 'New Class' was introduced in 1961 as the BMW 1500.  The mid-sized, sporty sedan sold so well that BMW didn't have the production capacity to meet production demand.  The BMW 1500 would set the design language and performance attributes for future BMW models.

BMW's logo represent the colors of Bavaria's national flag.  Although the exact shade of the Bavarian national colors have never been codified, the flag contains lozenges of white and blue.  BMW's logo contain two white spaces and two azure blue spaces.

BMW is based in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany.

BMW's considers their founding as a company occurring on 07 March 1916 with the formation of BFW or Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. BFW's principal industry was the manufacture of aircraft engines. BFW later changed their name in 1922 to BMW or Bayerische Motoren Werke.

BMW originally contracted with Lamborghini to engineer and build the M1. The partnership didn't work out and BMW finished the project without Lambo.

BMW purchased Husqvarna in July 2007. It has since sold it to an Austrian firm.

Daimler offered to take over BMW in 1959, which was rejected on 09 December cementing BMW's independence.

While the M Division's first production car was the M1, the first sedan built my the M Division was the M535i as a 1980 model year. The M535i was followed by the M635 CSi in 1984. The BMW M3 was released in 1986.

The Spandau, Berlin plant has been the home of BMW Motorrad since moving from Bavaria in 1969.

When BMW purchased Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach in 1928, they officially entered the automobile manufacturing business.  During this period, all BMW automobiles were made in Eisenach, Thuringia and not Bavaria.
